UPVfab, the innovation centre of the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV), has welcomed its first international resident company: the Portuguese company PICadvanced. This promising company, founded in 2014, incubated at the University of Aveiro and specialising in optical transceiver technology for telecommunications, will start to manage the encapsulation of its photonic chips internally with the Valencian company.
The cooperation between UPVfab and PICadvanced focuses on the encapsulation process of integrated photonics technology chips. This encapsulation ensures that the chips are protected and can be connected to other electronic and fibre optic systems.
In this way, the Portuguese company aims to carry out this process in UPVfab’s facilities, improving its efficiency and control over the production of its innovative optical components.
During a period of three to four years, PICadvanced will be present at the Universitat Politècnica de València, working on the development of the technology necessary to optimise the encapsulation. Once this development period is completed, PICadvanced will take over full production.
PICadvanced joins other leading companies in UPVfab, which already has resident integrated photonics companies such as VLC Photonics and iPronics, both UPV spin-offs, as well as Mapsi Photonics, based in Catalonia. Also, noteworthy are Alter Technology, from Madrid, dedicated to photonic electronic encapsulation, and KERAjet, a ceramics company located in Castellón.
